Wetlands : A wetland is a land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, such that it plays an important role in ecosystem.
The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands from other land forms or water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to the unique hydric soil.
The major role played by wetlands in the environment are mainly water purification, flood control, carbon sink and shoreline stability. Wetlands are also considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems,they serve as habitat for different species.
But these days are the most threatened because of various environmental changes.
As wetlands are the most threatened of ecosystem.
There are 92 wetlands in Himachal Pradesh covering 2.25 hectares area, out of which 85 are natural and 7 are man-made which constituted one percent of the total geographical area.
Pong Dam Lake, Chandratal and Renuka have been identified as Ramsar sites whereas Rewalsar and Khajiar lakes under national wetlands.
So , please try to conserve these wetlands as they are habitat for many of the animals and different type of vegetation grown in it.
Snow leopard our state animal is one of the animal of Chandar Nahan wetland.
Its our duty to protect different species from extinction.
