Districts of Himachal Pradesh Formation :Himachal Pradesh attained its full state hood on 15th April 1971 , prior to that, it had remained both union territory and part C state of India. Lets talk about the formation of Districts of Himachal Pradesh.

  • • Himachal was a Chief Commissioner’s province which came into being on 15th April, 1948.
  • After adopting constitution on 26th of January 1950, Himachal Pradesh became a part C state.
  • On 1st November, 1956 Himachal Pradesh became a Union Territory of India.
  • •On 18th December, 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25th January, 1971. Thus Himachal Pradesh emerged as the eighteenth state of Indian Union.

The key question starts with the formation of the different districts of Himachal Pradesh. Here is a brief profile of districts of Himachal Pradesh.

Currently Himachal has 12 districts but on its formation Himachal had only 4 districts namely Chamba , Mandi, Sirmaur and Mahasu.

This occured by integrating 30 big and small hill states.

These State were Baghat, Bhajji, Baghal, Bija, Balsen, Bushehar, Chamba, Darboti, Deloth-Dhadi, Dhami, Ghund, Jubbal, Khaneti Kyarhoti, Kumarsain, Kunnihar, Kuthar, Mandi, Madhan, Mahlog, Mangal, Kot (Ratesh), Keonthal, Rawinigarh, Sangri, Sirmour Suhet, Tharoch, Theog etc.

Total area of Himachal Pradesh was 27,169 square kilometers.

 

In 1954, the neighboring State of Bilaspur was integrated with Himachal Pradesh there by adding one more district in Himachal Pradesh having 1167 square Kilometers.

In 1960, the Border chini tehsil of Mahasu district was carved out as a separate administrative unit and district Kinnaur was formed raising the total number of districts to rise to 6 in Himachal Pradesh.

On 1st November, 1966 the then Punjab State was reorganized with the formation of Haryana as a separate State and Kullu, Kangra, Shimla and some hilly areas of Hoshiarpur district and Dalhousie of Gurdaspur district merged into Himachal Pradesh thus 4 new districts of Himachal Pradesh were formed viz. Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra and Shimla.

Total Districts of Himachal Pradesh became 10.

On 1st September, 1972 two more districts viz Hamirpur and Una were created by trifurcation of Kangra districts.

Mahasu and Shimla districts were recognised as Shimla and Solan districts on 1st September, 1972.

Since, 1st September, 1972 onwards, there had been no change in the administrative structure of HP.

Presently, there are 12 districts, 52 Sub-divisions, 75 tehsils and 34 Sub-tehsils in Himachal Pradesh.
