Ud Nag Dharamshala Rapper

First of all, tell us who you are and where you come from, what do you do and who else is in your family?

My real name is Udyan nag. I am from Dharamshala. I was born here and did my schooling from sacred heart school. I am a rapper and lyricist. I mix my songs myself and have performed live at the various stages and events. I live with my grandfather and my stage name is UD NAG.

So UD, you are a rapper. What made you inclined towards the field?

After listening to a few rap artist I was attracted towards it. I wasn’t a music lover initially but after listening to artist like Bohemia I got into it and I started writing. I was able to express myself and tell some real things happening to me and around me. This is what made me fall in love with hip hop and rapping. If we talk about my biggest influence, as of now, would be Divine. In the end hip-hop is about storytelling and I’m a storyteller.

You are related to Abhinav Nag and Anish, both artists from Kangra. How does this add up? Do you people have given a thought of collaboration?

Yes! Abhinav Nag is my cousin. I haven’t talked to Anish yet about collaboration. Actually, we did a refix of Neeru chali. And right now I am planning on my personal projects and fewer collabs. I want to reach the right audience as you can see I don’t get many views as yet. So I have to make some fans first,

Who is/are the backbone of your support system?

My grandfather and my friends Anchit, Ayush and Parag. These are the people who always have my back. Every new rap I write, these people hear it first and give me the most honest review.

Talking about Rapping, It’s verbal storytelling. What story of your life influenced you the most?

I think the family problems I faced during my childhood and late teens were the biggest influences. There are events which really bring out the artist hidden inside you. Be it a fight with a loved one, or family behavior or some social tragedy which gets you thinking. If you are telling a story you need to find out why you telling it. I have a dream to make the life of an underprivileged. Be it only 20 but I want to give something to this world unconditionally. You see there is so much hatred and violence in this world. A man might kill another just because of some misunderstanding and I really want to make this world a better place. Even in my song zindagi I talked about how we are lucky enough to get an education but I find people who don’t go to school being cooler and happier than we are. Its because we are afraid of failures but they are happy even for the smallest of thing that goes right. See this is the difference. In one of my songs I said ” jitni ankhen utne nazariye… Jitni mooh utni karate” and I think it’s true everybody has their own point of view. All I want is people should really listen to the lyrics while they can node their head to the flow and beat and rhythm. After all, rapping is the modern form of poetry.

What future do your raps hold? Where do you see yourself in like the next 5 years?

I can’t possibly tell you but I believe you can see me as a mainstream hip hop rapper as Divine. I’m much influenced by him. But life is unpredictable who knows what will happen next. Till class seven I wanted to serve the nation or be a cricketer. But right now rapping has my full attention.

What is coming next? When are you dropping your next project and what is it all about?

I’m thinking to drop songs every month. My next release most probably would be called” Headshot”. This song is kind of diss influenced but there is no particular artist I’m dissing. These days everybody is a rapper but they don’t really get why hip hop is about. It’s good to see people rapping but if you can’t tell the truth it’s of no use. I’m going to release few storytelling raps and rap especially for my city Dharamshala ” Mera Sher Dharamshala”.

More better songs are coming up. I looking to improve my song quality with every song I do. So that’s the reason why I take time to release my songs to get some things together but soon you gonna witness some of the best rap tracks of Himachal and hip hop in India.

Song quality is the biggest problem one faces when you do everything yourself and your home. I record mix master most of my songs. Few of my songs like Jai Jawan has been mixed by trappy808 . Lack of professional recording technology and tricks is what hinders my songs. My friends often say you’re live is much more energetic than your songs so I’m working on the output

In how many languages you can rap? What are you most comfortable in?

I rap in Hindi. Yes, I can rap in English but if you’re talking about comfort. I choose my mother tongue. Even though I was born and brought in Himachal. I am not comfortable speaking Pahari. So I choose Hindi. But maybe in the near future, you find a verse or two in Pahari.

Finally a message to your loved ones, your audience?

Keep your love coming. You won’t be disappointed by listening to my songs. Everything an artist is because of their audience and their fans. I give my audience a raw taste of life to tell them it isn’t always a bed of roses. This is what I have learned and it’s an old saying ” Gyan batne se bdta hai” if I am sharing my experiences and thoughts with them so that they can learn something from them. See books don’t always teach you.
